French giants target immediate signing of Dan Biggar

Dan Biggar is reportedly set to join French outfit Toulon for the rest of the season.

Biggar will miss Wales' autumn campaign through a knee injury, but reports in France suggest he will link up with the French giants once fit.

The Wales fly-half has already announced he will leave Northampton Saints at the end of this current campaign, causing the rumour mill to go into overdrive about potential moves to both France and Japan.

However, French site Rugbyrama report the 33-year-old will join the three-time European champions until the end of the current season. WalesOnline understand at this stage that talks have been held over a move, although no nothing formal has been agreed yet.

Northampton have already brought in highly-rated fly-half Fin Smith with immediate effect following Worcester's suspension from the Premiership, which might explain why they would be willing to let the Wales star depart early. An early exit would leave James Grayson and Matthew Arden as the remaining frontline No. 10s, while full-back George Furbank has also covered the position in the past.

Any move to France, typically thought of as one of the most physical leagues in the world, ahead of next year's World Cup could unsettle some Welsh fans given Biggar's likely importance at the 2023 tournament.

However, speaking about it last week, Wales coach Wayne Pivac admitted he had no preference over where the former Ospreys playmaker went next.

"Dan and I had a chat firstly around the knee and then return-to-play times," said Pivac. "He’s off contract and obviously there is a lot going on in English football at the moment. He has a family and an option would be to come home but it’s nothing more than that in the discussions at the moment. It’s one for his agent and clubs to talk about.

"He has got a lot to give. He’s really, really enjoying playing outside of Wales and he’s entitled to do that because he’s got 60 plus caps. The world is his oyster. I just want him to be in a good environment where player wellbeing is at the forefront.

"Wherever he goes, Test rugby is at the forefront of his mind and no doubt with Dan being Dan, that will be echoed with whoever his new employers may be. In other words, being available for Wales as often as he can. For me it’s about a good environment, well coached and that’s the priority."

Biggar would follow in the footsteps of fellow Welsh players Gavin Henson, Leigh Halfpenny and Gethin Jenkins if he signed for Toulon.
