A French public prosecutor has requested the maximum prison sentence of 20 years for Dominique Pelicot, who stands accused of organizing for more than 50 men to rape his unconscious wife. The prosecutor emphasized that Pelicot is “fully responsible” for his actions and highlighted the severity of the crimes committed.
The courtroom in Avignon, southern France, was filled with journalists and supporters as the prosecutor, Laure Chabaud, described Pelicot as a seemingly charming individual who was capable of heinous acts. Chabaud stressed that Pelicot does not suffer from any mental illness, making him accountable for the atrocities he orchestrated.
According to the prosecution, Pelicot used online platforms to solicit men to visit his home in Mazan, where they would sexually abuse his wife over a period of nearly 10 years. Pelicot admitted to drugging his wife with a sedative before allowing strangers to assault her.
During the court hearing, Pelicot kept his eyes closed and appeared remorseful as the details of his crimes were discussed. His defense lawyer, Beatrice Zavarro, acknowledged that the request for a lengthy prison term was expected but noted the emotional toll it takes on her client, a 72-year-old man facing the prospect of spending two decades behind bars.
The case has garnered significant attention both in France and internationally, shedding light on the disturbing nature of the crimes committed by Pelicot. The final decision on his sentence is pending, with the prosecution pushing for a severe punishment in light of the gravity of the offenses.
