London City Airport has been hit with cancellations amid foggy conditions in the capital.

The airport warned passengers to check before travelling as flights could be cancelled or delayed at short notice.

According to departures data from the airport’s website, only four of the eleven flights scheduled before 9.10am Tuesday morning took off.

The others were cancelled, although there does not appear to be any cancellations after mid-morning.

In a message to passengers, the airport said: “Due to adverse weather conditions, we are experiencing delays and cancellations.

“Please check with your airline before making your way to the airport.”

The Met Office has issued a ‘yellow’ alert for fog covering a swathe of England, including London and the south east which lasts until 10am Tuesday.

It warns of “dense patches of fog” being possible, with limited visibility of 50 metres in some places.

“Areas of fog are likely to cause some travel delays on Tuesday morning,” it states.

“Areas of fog are expected to become more extensive through the remainder of the night before slowly clearing through mid-morning on Tuesday.

“Some dense patches of fog are possible with visibility falling to around 50 metres in places.”

It explained that fog and other poor weather conditions mean that air traffic controllers have to increase the gap between planes that are landing, reducing the number of aircraft that an airport can manage.

“The same weather can make it slower and more difficult for the planes to taxi between the runway and terminal building,” it said.

“As many commercial flights are cruising more than five miles above the ground, they can be affected by different weather than we are experiencing on the ground.”
