Free screenings at city centre cinema this weekend to celebrate anniversary

The Irish Film Institute is offering cinema fans free film screenings this Saturday to celebrate its 30th anniversary in Temple Bar.

Open Day at IFI will see audiences of all ages welcomed for the celebrations. In addition to the free screenings, there will also be tours of behind-the-scenes activities at the IFI.

On the day, cinema fans will be treated to a specially curated programme of viewings which will be representative of the wide range of cinema that is on offer at the IFI all year round. The line-up includes classics, previews and carefully curated Irish films.

Some of the movies that visitors to IFI can expect to see for free this Saturday include Jean-Luc Godard’s The Image Book, Stanley Kubrik’s 2001: A Space Odyssey screened on luminous 70mm, Frank Borzage’s Academy Award-winning 7th Heaven and Geraldine Creed’s The Sun, The Moon and The Stars.

Preview screenings taking place on Saturday include Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song and After Yang, the story of a family who lose their AI helper, and the profound feelings that the experience induces. Other screenings include Pariah, a coming-of-age and coming-out tale set amongst Brooklyn’s black community; George Sluizer’s superlative thriller The Vanishing and Into The West which celebrates its 30th birthday this year.

IFI Director/CEO Ross Keane said of Open Day at IFI: "The programme scheduled throughout the day will represent the breadth of the IFI’s activities across film exhibition, preservation and education. We look forward to this day of celebration of one of Ireland’s most cherished cultural institutions."

Open Day visitors will also have a chance to learn about the incredible preservation, digitisation and restoration work of the IFI Irish Film Archive team at the ever-popular ‘Ask the Archivists’ desk. There will also be the opportunity to take a trip to the projection booth, and there will be annual IFI Membership available at a discounted rate on the day and special offers to anyone who signs up as an IFI Friend.
