Health officials are urging residents in areas impacted by ash from the wildfires to wear proper respiratory masks to protect against potential health problems. In response, county officials are providing N-95 masks for free at all Los Angeles Public Library locations.
The county's health department emphasized that these masks are specifically designed to reduce exposure to harmful fine particles found in the ash and smoke, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause serious health issues.
Dr. Anish Mahajan, chief deputy director for Los Angeles County's Department of Public Health, highlighted the importance of taking precautions to safeguard respiratory health during this time.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued a Windblown Dust and Ash advisory due to high winds expected in the region, effective until 7 p.m. Wednesday. The advisory impacts a significant portion of the 17 million residents in the area, with ash remaining a primary concern at present.
Residents are encouraged to visit their local assistance and disaster recovery centers in addition to public libraries to obtain these essential respiratory masks. The initiative aims to ensure that individuals have access to the necessary protective gear as they navigate the challenges posed by the ongoing wildfires and associated air quality issues.
