Residents of Los Angeles County are being urged to take precautions to safeguard their health against the harmful effects of breathing in wildfire ash. Officials have made it possible for people to acquire free N95 masks at various city and county libraries this week.
It is crucial for individuals residing in areas affected by the ash from the recent wildfires to wear proper respiratory masks to minimize the risk of potential health issues, as emphasized by a city health official.
Where to Obtain Free Masks:
- Los Angeles County Library: N95 masks, provided by the Department of Public Health, are currently being distributed at select Los Angeles County Libraries while supplies last.
- Los Angeles Public Library: All City of Los Angeles libraries are also offering N95 masks on a first-come, first-served basis until supplies are depleted. A comprehensive list of libraries can be found here.
The city of Los Angeles, under the leadership of Mayor Karen Bass, has already distributed a significant number of N95 masks. Additionally, masks are being handed out at recreation centers, senior centers, and local nonprofits to ensure broader access.
Dr. Anish Mahajan, the chief deputy director for Los Angeles County’s Department of Public Health, stressed the importance of using respiratory masks like N95 or P100 for effective protection against inhaling ash particles. These masks are specifically designed to reduce exposure to harmful fine particles present in the ash and smoke, which can deeply penetrate the lungs and lead to severe health complications.
Dr. Mahajan further emphasized that alternative face coverings such as cloth masks, medical masks, or bandanas do not offer sufficient protection against ash and fine particles, underscoring the necessity of using the recommended respiratory masks.
