Free doughnuts are on the menu at Hatchet Harry's in Newcastle for today only

Sweet-toothed shoppers are in for a treat today, as a new doughnut store hands out free tasters to anyone who goes into the shop.

Hatchet Harry’s, in Newcastle, is set to be jam-packed this weekend with the opening of a new doughnut store on the premises. The unit, under the arches in Forth Goods Yard, off Forth Banks, will be the second in the UK to house a branch of Harry’s Handcrafted Doughnuts, following a successful high street launch of the sister brand in Darlington, County Durham, earlier this year.

Business owners Jack Beadle and Richard Bridge came up with the idea during lockdown, when they were forced to temporarily close their Hatchet Harry’s axe-throwing venues due to Covid restrictions. Newcastle was the first centre to host axe-throwing leisure activity Hatchet Harry’s when the firm launched in 2019 and the company has since gone on to open six other axe-throwing venues around the UK.

Harry’s Handcrafted Doughnuts began as an online delivery business via social media, then the pair decided to take the brand to the high street, and intend to open further doughnut outlets across the UK, using part of existing Hatchet Harry’s premises where space allows. Jack said: “Our fantastic customers in Newcastle gave us the support and the means to rapidly expand our axe-throwing locations across the UK."

The doughnut giveaway will operate on a one-per-person, first-come-first-served basis, until the day’s stock has all gone. Harry’s Handcrafted Doughnuts in Newcastle is also expecting to serve coffee made with beans sourced from leading brand 200 Degrees Coffee soon, while doughnuts will be available for online ordering in the future.

Jack said that sharing venues with some of the existing Hatchet Harry’s venues would ensure the units were utilised throughout the day, as axe-throwing activities tended to be concentrated in the late afternoon and evenings. Hatchet Harry’s currently operates at centres in Newcastle, Glasgow, Liverpool, Aberdeen, Nottingham, Middlesbrough and Derby and Brighton.
