Freddie Mercury often described Mary Austin as the 'love of his life', despite his sexuality meaning that they would not remain romantically involved.
The Queen singer met Mary in the early 1970s as the band started making waves in the music industry.
They began dating and quickly became a couple but it wasn't to last romantically as Freddie discovered that his path would take him in a different direction.
By 1976, Freddie had started having an affair with a man and at the end of the year, he told Mary about his sexuality.
With Mary living in his West Kensington home, the revelation did not kill their relationship and they remained the best of friends for the rest of Freddie's life.
Eventually a break had to happen and Freddie moved out of the flat to a place at Stafford Terrace in Kensington.
Not wanting to leave Mary high and dry, he bought her a house nearby and their feelings actually deepened for each other.
In an interview in 1985, Freddie said: “All my lovers asked me why they couldn’t replace Mary, but it’s simply impossible.
“The only friend I’ve got is Mary, and I don’t want anybody else. To me, she was my common-law wife.
“To me, it was a marriage. We believe in each other, that’s enough for me.”
So, when the time came and Freddie passed away, Mary was bequeathed much of his fortune which was thought to have been around £38 million at the time.
From the mid 80s until he died, Freddie had been living with his partner Jim Hutton and it was reported that the iconic singer was wearing the wedding band that Jim had given him.
Jim was also a beneficiary from Freddie's estate but only shared what was left with the singer's parents and sister.
It is thought that Jim would have inherited around £500,000 with similar amounts going to Freddie's chef, Joe Fanelli and his PA, Peter Freestone.
The singer's driver, Terry Giddings was also given £100,000.
Queen's manager, Jim Beach, only announced 24 hours before Freddie's death through a public statement that the singer had been diagnosed with HIV and AIDS.
It is unclear exactly how much Freddie had amassed in his lifetime and only the particular amounts given to close friends and relatives are fully known.
