England great Freddie Flintoff has been named as the new head coach of Northern Superchargers in the men’s Hundred as his return to the sport continues.
Flintoff was severely injured in a near-fatal car crash while filming an episode of the BBC’s Top Gear last December and has increased his involvement in cricket during his recovery this year.
The 45-year-old worked with England’s U19s during an incognito stint this summer and then with the senior white-ball side during their series against New Zealand and Ireland in September.
The former all-rounder is currently with the England Lions, who fly to the UAE for a training camp this week, and could yet join the Test side on their tour of India next year.
Thus far, his involvement has been limited to less formal mentoring roles but Wednesday morning’s announcement confirmed Flintoff will take up the head coach post with the Superchargers ahead of next August’s tournament, after the team decided not to extend James Foster’s contract.
“I am excited to have been appointed Head Coach of the Northern Superchargers men’s team,” Flintoff said. “My time with the England Men’s team has been a reminder of just how special cricket is to me, and I’m relishing the opportunity to be back amongst it, helping to guide the Superchargers team to success on the field while making memories off it and helping to take cricket to more people.
“The Superchargers have a great fan base who I cannot wait to meet and bring along with us this season. I'm looking forward to making Headingley my new home.”
