Freddie Flintoff dubbed 'not normal' by Paddy McGuinness after alligator encounter

Freddie Flintoff has recalled attempting to get close to an alligator whilst filming in a swamp for Top Gear, with Paddy McGuinness commenting that his co-star is "not normal."

The former cricketer, 44, and his co-presenters on the popular BBC motoring show took an RV trip around the US for the new series - which returns over the weekend.

The experience is understood to have seen the group - which consists of Freddie as well as co-stars Paddy, 48, and Chris Harris, 47 - pass through an alligator-infested swamp.

And it's been revealed that Freddie tried to get quite close to one of the four-legged inhabitants of the swamp, with him said to have wanted to get out the RV for a closer look.

Asked why he tried to engage with the creature, he teased on the Headliners podcast: "I've watched Crocodile Dundee, I know what you do. I love wildlife, I find it bizarre.

"I've been so lucky to have opportunities to film around the world and I just get drawn to it. The bizarre thing [filming Top Gear] is you take this weird comfort from a TV camera."

He however acknowledged that it would help deal with an alligator, though co-star Paddy admitted that such antics don't faze him anymore as he isn't surprised by Freddie.

Paddy referred to his co-star Freddie as "not normal," and said that once you get used to that, "everything sort of is normal" - before elaborating on their experience together.

He commented: "You sort of get comfy in Fred's world so whatever he does you go, 'yeah it's alright, it's Fred, that's normal... for him' and then we all just get on with it."

The presenter recalled another experience on Top Gear in which they were travelling along a mile high road in Nepal that had a "sheer drop down the side" of it.

Paddy said his co-star wasn't concerned by the cliff-edge, noting that they were filming for TV. The presenter said he had to remind the former cricketer that it was still real.

He recalled such a conversation, stating that if they were to go off the edge of the road the producers "don't pause it halfway down the cliff and rewind [them] back to the top."

"It's real, you can't pause it, you can't stop an alligator from dragging you under the water cause the BBC are filming it," Paddy further commented on the podcast recently.

The latest episode of Headliners is available through BBC Sounds. Top Gear is set to return for its new series on Sunday (June 5) on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
