Fred Rutten rejects Manchester United job under Erik ten Hag

Dutch coach Fred Rutten has revealed he's turned down the opportunity to become Erik ten Hag's assistant at Manchester United.

Ten Hag was officially confirmed as United's next manager last month. Ten Hag joins United on a three-year contract with the option of an additional year and he's set to arrive at Old Trafford after trying to win the Eredivisie with Ajax.

The 52-year-old is also set to bring some of his own staff with him to United, while he'll also inherit some existing members of the backroom staff — Ralf Rangnick appointed Chris Armas and Sascha Lense this season — at the club. Mitchell Van der Gaag, currently assistant at Ajax, is set to join Ten Hag in Manchester, however, United are yet to finalise terms on that deal and contracts for other assistant coaches.

Interestingly, former PSV and Schalke manager Rutten has now claimed he was also been asked by Ten Hag to become his assistant at United.

"Erik ten Hag has asked me to be his assistant at Manchester United, I said no," the 59-year-old said on Dutch TV.

"Everyone makes his own choices in life. I have a family, I have grandchildren that I want to see. This type of project, I felt uncomfortable with it."

Rutten has managed Twente, Vitesse, PSV and Feyenoord during his career and he's worked with Ten Hag before. The 59-year-old is currently out of work after last managing Anderlecht in Belgium three years ago.
