Fraser Scotland recall explained by Clarke

Fraser Scotland recall explained by Clarke

STEVE CLARKE has explained there was " no real process" ahead of recalling Ryan Fraser to the Scotland squad.

The Newcastle winger was selected in the national team for the matches against Ukraine and Ireland in the Nations League.

Fraser's return to the international fold comes after he withdrew from a Scotland camp last year with a calf injury before being pictured in light Newcastle training.

However, after discussions between Fraser and Scotland boss Clarke last year it was decided he would be selected if he is fit and performing for his club side.

Now, Clarke has recalled Fraser to the national side for the first time in almost a year.

Quizzed on the decision to include Fraser, Clarke responded: "There's no real process with Ryan. I said in March, when he missed the two friendly matches, we had a chat.

"Ryan wasn't playing for Newcastle at the time. I said at the time, if he is fit and playing well for Newcastle, he's definitely one that we have to consider for selection.

"That's why he's in the squad this time, because he's fit and available and playing well for Newcastle."
