A mint, a bottle of water, and a smile — that is how Fraser Coast residents who ordered an Uber from Scott Cabrie were met when they opened his car door.
It has been more than a week since the 47-year-old was allegedly killed by two teenagers in the small town of Howard, about four hours' north of Brisbane, while driving for Uber.
But as friends, family, and total strangers gathered on the beach in nearby Hervey Bay for a sunset vigil Friday night, they wanted to focus on the legacy that "Scotty" made throughout his many trips across the Fraser Coast.
"He loved the community, and the community loved him," said Mr Cabrie's best friend and fellow driver Cam Thomas.
"He did long hours and he built big relationships.
"He knew in a small place like Hervey Bay that you couldn't just pick up a rider and drop them off … it wasn't about the money for Scotty."
Many hours behind the wheel
Uber Australia said Mr Cabrie clocked up nearly 25,000 trips in four years.
Mr Thomas said he felt lucky to enjoy the company of his friend and colleague alongside the rest of the community.
"He lived for getting in and chatting to the next customer, the friendships forged, the relationships he built, the shoulders that cried on his," he said.
"He listened and he lifted people up.
"I think he will be up there tonight smiling down on us in Hervey Bay."
Investigation ongoing
Police have charged an 18-year-old man with Mr Cabrie's murder. The man appeared before the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Monday via video link.
He made no application for bail and his matter was adjourned until April 20.
A 17-year-old co-accused boy has appeared before the Hervey Bay Children's Court.
