Franz Ferdinand go viral after New York teacher uses band's name for WW1 lesson

Franz Ferdinand found themselves trending online after a teacher tried to use their name as a reference in a First Wold war lesson.

The Scots art-poppers are named after the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the imperial throne of the Austro-Hungarian empire, whose assassination ( along with his wife Sophie) on June 28, 1914, provided the spark that ignited the Great War.

Teachers of history love having a modern reference when talking about the war.

And although Franz are still going strong and just released their greatest hits compilation Hits To The Head, their world-wide first hit Take Me Out came out in January 2004, so not all kids at school will know who they are.

A teacher based in New York proved this fact when she posted a now viral tweet which said: "Today, when introducing WWI, a student raised her hand and brought up the death of a certain archduke.

"Nobody knew his name, so as a hint, I offered that he shares his name with a band.

"Gentle reader, my students asked if there had perhaps been an Archduke Metallica."

After the post spawned over a quarter of a million views, one person said: "Franz Ferdinand-Take Me Out How do they not know the classics?"

Another argued: "They were formed in 02, they aren’t classic lmao."

Another teacher recalled: "Unfortunately, I was teaching a WWI unit at their height. The kids thought I was messing with them. Me: "THE GUY'S NAME WAS FRANZ FERDINAND. Check the textbook. I am not making this up."

And someone else said: "Gen Z knows who Metallica is?"

Another spoke of the funny things you remember form school saying: "My son and his friend always say, “If we learn nothing else, we will always know a-squared + b-squared = c-squared, Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s assassination led to the start of WWI, and the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.” High school in a nut shell."

While a sixth joked: "You blame the guy for getting assassinated, he kept screaming "Take me out"
