A search of the River Thames has been called off after a member of the public spotted a man entering the water at Vauxhall Bridge.

Scotland Yard’s marine unit and the coastguard scoured the River Thames for two hours after CCTV confirmed a man fell at around 4.50am on Thursday.

They have since called off the search without finding the man.

A spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police said: “At 4.49am on Thursday, 17 February police were called to Vauxhall Bridge after a man was seen by a member of the public to enter the water. This was confirmed by CCTV enquiries.

“Officers, including the Met’s Marine Unit, attended with support from the London Fire Brigade, the National Police Air Service, HM Coastguard and the RNLI.

“An extensive search was conducted in the vicinity of Vauxhall Bridge and further along the river towards Westminster Bridge.

“Despite the best efforts of all involved, the man was not located and the search was concluded at 6.25am.

“Officers will now make further enquiries in an effort to identify him.”
