Frankie Dettori and John Gosden have reunited after racing’s greatest double act had briefly separated.
Following Dettori’s ill-judged riding at Royal Ascot last month, Gosden called for a ‘sabbatical’ – but that is already over. Yesterday, Dettori teamed up with the man who had saved his career, which appeared to be over in 2012, when partnering Irish Oaks contender Emily Upjohn in a 6am gallop at Newmarket racecourse.
Regarding Emily Upjohn’s controversial defeat in the Oaks at Epsom when second behind Tuesday, Gosden said: “The less we say about Epsom the better. You know what it is all about. I need a jockey that focuses. It can’t be a part-time job.
“As it has been pointed out at Wimbledon, Rafael Nadal practises the most and the hardest in the mornings. That is what it is all about and that is very clear. I said I’m pleased the way Frankie has got on with it and getting rides everywhere else. It is exactly what I wanted to see.
“He has rather taken a lot of pride in how few mounts he has in a season. I’m very clear we need to be more focused and a little less part-time, that is all. That is what it is about and nothing else.”
Gosden also ended speculation as to who will partner his star filly Inspiral in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket on Friday. He said: “It’s my decision that Frankie will ride Mighty Ulysses on Thursday and Inspiral on Friday before he heads to New York to ride at Belmont Park.”
