Former Manchester United player Cristiano Ronaldo was 'offered' to Eintracht Frankfurt, according to the club's executive board member Axel Hellmann.
Ronaldo's sudden departure from Old Trafford came in the wake of the sensational claims he made against the club during his explosive interview with Piers Morgan. Yet even before the two-part special came to light, it was clear to see the 37-year-old's discontent at his current situation at United.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner had looked to leave United over the summer in pursuit of Champions League football, with Frankfurt now being revealed as one of the potential destinations for the Portugal international. The Bundesliga side, who await a round of 16 tie against Napoli in the UEFA competition, could have seen Ronaldo join their ranks earlier in the season.
Hellmann has now claimed that the German club were given the chance to sign the veteran.
He told DAZN (as per Mail Online ): "He [Ronaldo] was even offered to us." Philip Holzer, chairman of the club's supervisory board, also added: "I have the feeling he was offered to every Champions League club."
After scoring the opening goal for Portugal's World Cup campaign from the penalty spot in 3-2 win over Ghana, Ronaldo failed to find the back of the net for the rest of the tournament.
National team coach Fernando Santos even dropped the striker for their final two matches of the tournament, with United-linked 21-year-old Goncalo Ramos stealing the headlines by scoring a hat-trick against Switzerland in a 6-1 round of 16 victory.
Ronaldo is still yet to find a new club, with the former United man no doubt taking stock of his options as the dust settles from the conclusion of the World Cup.
