Frankfurt Airport delays: Flights at busy Germany hub grounded after drone spotted in area

Flights at one of Europe's busiest airports were grounded for more than an hour after a drone was spotted in the area.

Planes at Frankfurt Flughafen Airport in western German could not take off or land due to the sighting.

Police said on Twitter that they are investigating the incident and that delays are likely.

The problems began at 11.20 local time - 10.20 GMT - and lasted for almost two hours.

A spokesman for the airport told the Standard: "We have been dealing with the incident since 11.20am local time.

"We had a drone sighting in the vicinity of the airport.

"The use of the the runways has been suspended by air traffic controllers and authorities are working to resolve the situation.!

A similar situation occurred in May last year, when the runways were closed for nearly an hour following a drone sighting.
