Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers offense will be getting a chance to redeem themselves in another preseason game with another New York team. But just like the first one, the second matchup won’t be easy.
A few days after last weekend’s dud against the Jets, head coach Frank Reich was asked what he’d like to see out of his group on Friday in their visit to see the Giants.
“Obviously, wanna have some success out there, wanna move the ball, make first downs, score some points,” Reich said on Wednesday. “Just play more consistently as an offensive unit. And then as an offensive unit—this isn’t just Bryce—obviously, be better on third down. And then, get our run game going a little bit. Yeah, just overall on offense, we just need to have a better outing.”
The first outing resulted in zero points and 199 total yards. That disappointing night also saw Carolina quarterbacks absorb eight hits and five sacks, with rookie Bryce Young taking a few of those punishing pops.
Young, in his preseason debut, completed four of his six throws for 21 yards. With an overwhelmed offensive line in front of him, the No. 1 overall pick didn’t have many chances to shine.
Unfortunately, that may be the case again with Giants defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale on deck.
“This is gonna be a really good challenge,” said Reich, who also described the opportunity as unique. “For our offense against their defense—particularly just because Wink is very exotic in his pressure packages. There’s gonna be blitz 0, there’s gonna be all kinds of pressures. And normally, in a regular-season game, we are spending hours and hours and hours preparing for someone like Wink, and that blitz package.”
Reich said that Young’s playing time will be similar to what he saw last Saturday. The 22-year-old was in for three drives against the Jets.
