Frank Reich chokes up while awarding game ball to Thomas Brown

Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich, who’s sometimes referred to his offense as his baby, was one proud papa on Sunday afternoon.

Reich’s team got their first win of the season in their first game with offensive coordinator Thomas Brown calling the shots. After the emotional victory, the two embraced for what might have been an even more emotional moment.

Just as he did with that special game ball, Reich handed over the play-calling duties to Brown—right before diving into the bye week. Between a struggling offense, an 0-6 start and Reich’s belief in Brown’s growth—the change was made to not only perhaps provide a spark, but also promote a smoother and more defined operation.

And Reich, following the 15-13 triumph over the Houston Texans, admitted that was indeed the case.

“As far as the game management side, being able to talk to the guys upstairs a little bit more,” he told reporters. “There wasn’t a whole lotta crazy stuff that came up in the game. But what did come up, I thought we handled it well. I thought the communication was good. I was able to keep in tune to what the defense and what special teams were doin’ a bit more. So I definitely felt the difference.”

Under Brown, the Panthers averaged 7.6 yards per passing attempt—a slight jump from their previous six-game mark of 5.5 yards. The unit also saw the most poised performance out of rookie Bryce Young, who completed 22 of his 31 throws for 235 yards, a touchdown and no turnovers.
