Former England star Frank Lampard will not face trial for driving while using his mobile phone after prosecutors dropped the case.
The ex-Chelsea midfielder, 43, was said to have driven his Mercedes in Gloucester Road, South Kensington while on the phone last April.
He had indicated he would contest the allegation and hired the law firm of Nick ‘Mr Loophole’ Freeman to fight his corner.
Lampard was listed to stand trial at City of London Magistrates’ Court but the case was discontinued because of “insufficient evidence”.
Dutch YouTuber Mike van Erp - known as CyclingMikey - claimed he spotted Lambard chatting on his phone while clutching a cup of coffee and controlling the steering wheel with his wrist.
Mr van Erp, who rides with a helmet-mounted GoPro camera was behind the prosecution of former world champion boxer Chris Eubank who ran a red light in Hyde Park in his gold Rolls-Royce convertible last year.
He also reported Guy Ritchie for driving while using his phone in 2020, which landed the director with a six-month ban.
A Crown Prosecution Service spokesperson said: “After examining a file of evidence submitted by the Metropolitan Police Service, we concluded, in accordance with our legal test, there was insufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction.”
Lampard netted 147 goals for Chelsea, and played 106 times for England scoring 29 goals.
He was sacked as Chelsea manager last January.
Lampard, of Tregunter Road, Chelsea, denied using a handheld mobile phone/device while driving a motor vehicle, namely a Mercedes, on Gloucester Road but the charge was discontinued.
