Frank Lampard should not be silenced by 'confusing' FA Everton charge

Everton fans were no doubt not surprised in the slightest when the news came on Wednesday that Frank Lampard had been charged for the post-match comments he made after the Merseyside derby with Liverpool.

Looking back at what the Everton boss said about the penalty decision that didn't go the way of Anthony Gordon at Anfield, at the time there was an expectation that the FA would scrutinise it at the very least. Of course, as many pointed out, certain other managers have not faced the same scrutiny for similar quotes, but that's getting off track.

Look at the responses from many Blues to the news of Lampard's charge, though, and you'll see a fair amount of confusion. Mainly, because those fans believe their manager was only speaking the truth.

Lampard has only been in situ on Merseyside since the last day of January but already he has proven that he's not afraid to confront the main issues head-on. He won't hold back in his post-match interviews when he thinks something has desperately gone against his side.

The first example of that came when Rodri got away with conceding the most blatant penalty of the season at Goodison Park. That's a decision which undoubtedly sticks in the minds of many.

After that match, which ended in a 1-0 Manchester City win, Lampard remarked: "We’ve lost a point because of a professional who cannot do his job right. You start searching for whys and I can’t think why. It is so incompetent to get it wrong.

"Incompetence at best, at worst who knows? I’ll wait for the statement or apology they do when things are wrong but it will mean nothing."

Everton did receive an apology for that incident, of course. Lampard, meanwhile, didn't face any subsequent action for those comments - which were undoubtedly worse than the questions he posed in the aftermath of the Liverpool defeat last month.

He also went on the offensive multiple times following a decision to give Allan a red card against Newcastle United, which subsequently saw the midfielder banned for three matches, including two important Premier League games away to West Ham United and Burnley.

Lampard highlighted the decision to upgrade the dismissal as wrong on the night, and later criticised the choice not to reduce a three-match ban for the Brazilian. Again, he didn't face scrutiny from the FA in this regard either.

Everton fans have talked about a siege mentality for the last few weeks, with many national pundits seemingly revelling in the fight the club currently finds itself in. In some respects that led to those incredible scenes of unity before, during and after the weekend over Chelsea.

In the face of adversity, Blues are banding together in any way they can to try and drag the club out of the mire. Lampard himself seems to have bought into that ideal from his early stages in charge of the club. He knows what Evertonians want to see from their side on the pitch and he's not afraid to address the mistakes of the players when matters have not gone their way. But, he's not about to turn a blind eye to decisions he thinks are wrong, either.

There's a large section of supporters who feel aggrieved at what they think are a huge amount of subjective calls that have gone against them. Think back to Demarai Gray being pulled back by Ezri Konsa, Richarlison not winning a penalty against Tottenham Hotspur, Salomon Rondon not being awarded a spot kick against Brentford - and these are only scratching the surface.

When these calls go against the Blues, it's understandable that supporters will feel angry, and they want answers. As their representative in these conversations, Lampard has known that he must stand up for his team and question the decisions that are costing his squad.

An FA charge in this scenario shouldn't put him off doing that. In fact, his post-match comments are often only endearing him to Everton fans more.
