Frank Lampard's Everton transfer admission as Man City make coaching changes

Here are the latest Premier League headlines for Tuesday, July 5.

Lampard transfer warning

Everton manager Frank Lampard admits it is vital they get their recruitment right as he looks to avoid another season battling against relegation. The sale of Richarlison to Tottenham in a £60million deal last week has left the club without their leading Premier League scorer from last season, a campaign in which they were without injured England striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin for long periods.

However, the Brazil international still only registered 10 goals and the next-highest scorer was Andros Townsend with just three. The departures of Fabian Delph, Cenk Tosun and Jonjoe Kenny after the expiration of their contracts leave a number of places available, but Everton's finances, having posted cumulative losses of more than £370m over the last three years, mean they are not in a position to spend heavily.

Owner Farhad Moshiri, who is in discussions to sell the club, has spent more than £500m on players during his six-year tenure, but very few purchases have turned out to be a success or value for money. Everton appointed a new director of football in Kevin Thelwell in February, a month after Lampard arrived, so this will be their first proper transfer window at the club.

"Recruitment - and who goes out - is a huge part of any football club," Lampard told evertonfc.com. "Particularly when you are a manager who comes in mid-season. The transfer window shut one day after I joined, so you work with the players you have straight away. But when you look forward, you think about how you can strengthen in different areas, 'How would this look?'. It is vital to get that right. It will be a big challenge for me and the club...to make sure we go in the right direction, because it is clear we don't want to be fighting relegation and recruitment will be a big part of that."

Richarlison picks up ban

New Tottenham forward Richarlison has been suspended for one match after he celebrated a goal for his old club Everton last season by throwing a smoke flare. The 25-year-old, who completed a £60million move to Spurs last week, scored the Toffees' only goal in a 1-0 win at home to Chelsea on May 1 and reacted to the strike by picking up a flare which was lying on the pitch and throwing it into the stands at Goodison Park.

The Football Association announced on Tuesday he had been banned for one match and fined £25,000 after admitting to improper conduct. An FA statement read: "An independent regulatory commission has suspended Richarlison de Andrade for one match and fined him £25,000 following a breach of FA Rule E3 that took place during a Premier League game on Sunday, May 1, 2022.

"The Tottenham Hotspur FC forward admitted his conduct while playing for Everton during the 46th minute of this game against Chelsea FC was improper, and his sanction was imposed during a subsequent hearing." Richarlison was charged by the FA on June 1.

Guardiola brings in new coaches

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has finalised his backroom team for next season, with Rodolfo Borrell becoming assistant boss and Enzo Maresca rejoining the club. The changes, announced by the Premier League champions on Tuesday, were prompted by the departure of Guardiola's previous number two, Juanma Lillo, last month.

Borrell, who has previously worked at Barcelona and Liverpool, has been at City since 2014 and on the first-team coaching staff since Guardiola's arrival in 2016. Maresca, formerly head coach of the club's elite development squad, joins Guardiola's team a year after leaving City for what proved a short spell as Parma manager.

"Manchester City are delighted to announce that Enzo Maresca has returned to the club as part of Pep Guardiola's backroom staff," a statement read. "Rodolfo Borrell, who has been at City since 2014, will step up to the role of assistant coach in place of the recently-departed Juanma Lillo."
