Frank Lampard refuses to answer Everton board question after Brighton embarrassment

Frank Lampard declined to comment on the chants against Everton's board from sections of the fanbase during Everton's defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion.

The home supporters had responded to calls to back their players for what was a crucial home encounter as the club attempts to avoid another relegation fight. But as Brighton scored three goals in six miserable second half minutes, attention turned towards the club's hierarchy.

Everton scored a late consolation but Goodison Park was otherwise shellshocked after watching disaster unfold in front of them.

Even before Pascal Gross picked up a loose Idrissa Gueye backpass to put the visitors 4-0 up, sections of the crowd had turned their focus away from the pitch and towards the directors' box. Parts of the crowd led chants of 'sack the board' - with the calls being repeated after the final whistle.

Following the game, Lampard was asked for his thoughts on the calls but declined to comment.

The calls came as the prospect of another gruelling relegation battle became increasingly real with Everton slumping to their third consecutive home defeat. They sit just one point above the bottom three and with a January transfer window whead of them in which their options appear to be limited despite the peril facing them.

Lampard had united the fanbase and helped his side avoid the drop on the penultimate game of last season, celebrating in the directors' box in a nod to the support he had been given from club chiefs. Facing questions about his own future after the defeat on Tuesday, he said he would continue to focus on his work, with Manchester United in the FA Cup Everton's next opponents.

On Monday, Everton campaign group NSNOW, formerly known as the 27 Campaign, announced plans for a 'sit-in' protest against the management at the top of the club after the league match with Arsenal next month. Following the game, the group said it would move that demonstration forward to Everton's next home game, against Southampton.
