Frank Lampard makes brutally honest Chelsea confession regarding Todd Boehly's purchase

Frank Lampard has admitted change had to happen at Chelsea since his sacking from the club in 2021.

Lampard took charge of the Blues – back then on a permanent basis – from the summer of 2019 until January 2021 but was relieved of his duties after a series of poor results. Since then, so much has changed at the club including the ownership with Roman Abramovich selling Chelsea to American billionaire Todd Boehly in a multi-billion pound deal.

Boehly has invested hundreds of millions into the club so far as he looks to try and transform the Blues’ fortunes on the pitch. In just two transfer windows at Stamford Bridge, Boehly and Clearlake Capital have spent over £600million on new signings.

So much change has seen a lack of stability at the club, something that European’s elite teams tend to boast. Lampard, though, believes some things had to change at the club from his first time here as head coach.

"In terms of the change I haven’t been here for that so I don’t want to casually comment on ‘ifs’ and ‘why’," Lampard told reporters on Friday afternoon. "All I can speak about is what I came into.

"We obviously have a big squad which I think was done for all the right intentions but of course to manage that and get a really tight, connected unit which is the first thing in post. Connected people working together in a positive way. Then you can start talking about tactics, where are we going on the pitch etc? If you don’t have that it is very tough and that has been very challenging.

"It’s something that should and will be addressed going forwards. In terms of players knowing the club, yeah, good people knowing the club are a great thing. But just knowing the club is not necessarily a reason to come into a role. I am not talking about any individual there, it is just a fact.

"If you can get people who know the club who are good at their job that is a great thing. I do know, you mention Petr [Cech], he is a person who cares deeply about this club. As many of the players from my era and those gone by do too.

"It’s not an easy one because it is the quality of the work you do as much as how much you love the club that is important. It is about getting the right balance in the building.

"In certain areas and if I am honest as well, some change had to happen. I was here not that long ago. Things that happen here at Cobham are important, how they affect the squad and team on the pitch in terms of environment, so some things are good to change, other things not and some people are scared of change and only the end result is the important bit.

"We are not there yet. I is a process so those things need to be continued to be worked on."
