Everton and Frank Lampard are trying to finalise a contract for him to become the Blues' new manager.
It is understood that Lampard, 43, has been offered the vacant managerial position following a final round of interviews in London on Friday.
But an agreement has yet to be reached on the terms of Lampard's deal and the make-up of the backroom staff he would want at Goodison.
Anthony Barry, the former Everton youth player who he recruited to work for him at Chelsea, and Steve Holland have been brought up in talks with the club, but talks over the terms of Lampard's arrival are still being discussed.
Lampard was on a shortlist of candidates to replace the sacked Rafa Benitez that also included Vitor Pereira and Duncan Ferguson.
Wayne Rooney claimed Everton contacted his agent but the Derby County boss declined the offer of an interview.
Ferguson took caretaker charge of the team for the game with Aston Villa last weekend while Pereira had, initially, been seen as the favourite.
But Lampard moved to the front of the pack this week and is now attempting to finalise details on his appointment as Everton manager.
Sources, this morning have indicated that an agreement remains some way off.
The Blues are keen to confirm a new manager as soon as possible given the pressing need to bolster the squad with a midfielder before Monday night's transfer deadline.
