Frank Lampard confirms Mason Mount talks amid Liverpool interest in Chelsea midfielder

Frank Lampard has revealed he plans talks with reported Liverpool target Mason Mount following the former Everton boss’ return to Chelsea as caretaker manager.

The England international is out of contract at Stamford Bridge next year and looks set to be sold this summer if an agreement can’t be reached with the Londoners. Having already rejected a number of offers, the 24-year-old has ultimately struggled for form this season with such uncertainty regarding his future hanging over his head.

With Liverpool well-documented to be plotting a midfield overhaul this summer, Mount continues to be linked with a move to Anfield, and is believed to be high on the list of transfer priorities.

However, Lampard’s return to Stamford Bridge could be good news for Mount, given the midfielder thrived under his former manager both on loan at Derby County and at Chelsea when enjoying his first taste of Premier League and Champions League football.

Lampard was asked about the 24-year-old’s future at a press conference after being confirmed as caretaker manager. And while he admitted he wasn’t well-placed to comment on Mount’s contract status, he admitted he would hold talks with the midfielder as he looks to help him rediscover form at Stamford Bridge.

“I don't know enough about it to talk about it,” he told reporters. “And I think it would probably be wrong for me to delve into anything other than Mason has always been a fantastic player for me, from my days at Derby and the impact he had there to when I came back to Chelsea.

“It’s an absolute pleasure that I watched him, amongst others I coached in that period in terms of Reece James, Tammy Abaraham and Tomori, and others if I missed them, to have gone on and been huge players here or elsewhere.

“So that’s great but with Mason, I know he’s had a few slight injury problems maybe as I understand. It’s important for me to speak to him and find out where he’s at but I know what I get from Mason.

“In those terms, I just want to see him perform on the pitch and of course we have a good relationship so will talk a lot. I think he is a huge player for Chelsea and has been in his time here so I look forward to talking to him more.”
