Francis Ford Coppola arrives at the Oscars on Sunday, March 27, 2022, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Nearly half a century after Francis Ford Coppola won the Cannes Film Festival's Palme

Legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola is set to make a grand return to the Cannes Film Festival nearly 50 years after winning the prestigious Palme d'Or. His self-financed epic, 'Megalopolis,' has been confirmed to premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 17. The film will be screened in competition, making Coppola eligible for another shot at the coveted Palme d'Or.

'Megalopolis' has been a passion project for Coppola, who independently financed the film with a reported budget of $120 million. The movie, which he has been developing since the early 1980s, explores the theme of rebuilding a metropolis and features a star-studded cast including Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, and more.

Coppola's Cannes history is illustrious, having previously won the Palme d'Or for 'Apocalypse Now' and 'The Conversation.' Thierry Fremaux, the Cannes chief, expressed his excitement about welcoming Coppola back to the festival as a filmmaker presenting his latest work.

Aside from 'Megalopolis,' the Cannes Film Festival has also announced premieres for other highly anticipated films such as George Miller's 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' and Kevin Costner's 'Horizon, an American Saga.' Additionally, George Lucas is set to receive an honorary Palme d'Or at the festival.

The Cannes Film Festival, scheduled to commence on May 14, is gearing up to showcase a diverse array of cinematic offerings, with Coppola's 'Megalopolis' poised to be a standout feature that will undoubtedly captivate audiences and critics alike.
