The biggest game in world football is almost upon us as, arguably, the two best sides in the international game face off in the World Cup 2022 final.
It’s reigning world champions France looking to make history against an Argentina side led by Lionel Messi and fuelled by their idol’s last dance, and last chance, before international retirement.

De Paul and Molina double-act key to thwarting Mbappe
Lionel Scaloni has switched between a three- and four-man defence, but against France he is expected to opt for the latter. Two banks of four seem like the best way to stop Kylian Mbappe, and worked well in the semi-final win over Croatia. Nahuel Molina and Rodrigo De Paul will patrol the right flank and are suited to the task of stopping Mbappe.
De Paul and Molina play together at Atletico Madrid and are typical Diego Simeone players, aggressive and full of running. Mbappe was kept quiet by both England and Morocco. Can Argentina find a way to stop him, as he bids to win a second World Cup before turning 24?
Fernandez and Tchouameni vying for midfield supremacy
All eyes will be on Lionel Messi and Mbappe but, in midfield, two young stars will be looking to take control of the game. Aurelien Tchouameni, 22, and Enzo Fernandez, 21, have both enjoyed excellent tournaments operating at the base of their teams’ midfields. The pair usually like to play further forward, but they have sat deep for the benefit of the team.
Tchouameni scored against England, while Fernandez has been key for Argentina since coming into the team in their third group match. Both will look to break-up play and get on the ball to create counter-attacks for Mbappe and Messi. Winning the midfield battle will be crucial to cutting off the supply line to either attack and, therefore, the outcome of the match.
Rabiot return will help unleash Mbappe… and halt Messi
France are set to be boosted by the return of Adrien Rabiot, who missed their semi-final win due to illness. Youssouf Fofana came into the team and did well, but the return of Rabiot could be key for France. He operates on the left of a midfield three, shifting across to cover for Mbappe when he stays high up the pitch when France do not have the ball.
In possession, Rabiot pushes high onto the opposing centre-back so Mbappe can be one-on-one with his full-back. Argentina like to attack down the right and Rabiot’s ability to help left-back Theo Hernandez, who has looked vulnerable, is also vital.
