With the 2024 Paris Games currently underway, a significant heatwave is set to impact France this week, originating from a hot air mass moving in from Spain. Wednesday is anticipated to be the peak of this heatwave across the nation.
Both high and low temperatures are forecasted to soar well above average in the coming days, prompting France's national meteorological department, Meteo-France, to issue orange heat warnings for 39 different locations starting Monday at noon local time.
Although France has already seen temperatures exceeding 40°C (104°F) in Céret on July 20, an official heatwave has not yet been declared. In France, a heatwave is officially recognized as a period of significantly elevated temperatures lasting for a minimum of three days.
Here is a breakdown of the expected temperatures in select Olympic venue cities during this heatwave:
- In Paris and the surrounding region, maximum temperatures are projected to range from 34 to 36°C (93 to 97°F) on Tuesday and Wednesday.
- In Bordeaux, maximum temperatures are expected to approach 40°C (104°F) on Monday, remain around 38°C (100°F) on Tuesday, and then decrease more notably thereafter.
- In Lyon, maximum temperatures will reach nearly 39°C (102°F) on Tuesday and Wednesday.
- In Marseille, maximum temperatures are forecasted to hit 35°C (95°F).
