FPL Salah Gameweek 17 Tips: Top Three Captaincy Selections

Abdul Rehman (FPL Salah) has teamed up with SportsCasting to provide you with another round of Fantasy Football tips for Gameweek 17 and beyond.

Every week, FPL Salah will be providing you with insight and advice to gear you up, continuing with his Fantasy Premier League fancies for this weekend’s next set of fixtures.

This is his 18th season playing FPL, and he’s finished in the top 1,000 four times, with 14 finishes in the top 50,000. He also writes weekly FPL articles for The Athletic and Fantasy Football Hub.

This week, FPL Salah will be presenting his top three best captaincy selections for Gameweek 17.

Gameweek 17 looks like another close call for the captaincy with no clear standout choices. I will go through my top three options here and rank them.

FPL Salah Gameweek 17 Captain Tips

Bruno Fernandes (£8.4m) – Manchester United – Fixture: Bournemouth (H)

Bruno Fernandes has been in a great run of form lately with two goals in his last two. Over the season he has four goals and six assists with an xG of 5.64 and an xA of 2.88.

Manchester United come up against Bournemouth this week, which is a decent home game despite the Cherries doing well this season. United will be strong favourites for this one, and the Portuguese midfielder is the one most likely to get attacking returns.

He has both goals and assists in his locker, is nailed to start and takes set-pieces and penalties.

Bruno often plays as an attacking midfielder as part of a front three or sometimes as one of the two 10’s and seems to be getting a lot more freedom to attack under Ruben Amorim.

He most certainly has the fixture this week to get a big haul. The 30-year-old is a great differential captain given the fixtures for Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool this week.

Ranking: 8.5/10

Cole Palmer (£11.1m) – Chelsea – Fixture: Everton (A)

Cole Palmer has had a great start to the season with 11 goals and seven assists. He has registered an xG of 9.10 and an xA of 3.91. He is the main man at Chelsea and will no doubt end the season as one of their top-scoring players.

This week, the Blues come up against a struggling Everton side, who are well and truly in the relegation battle.

Enzo Maresca’s side have to be considered title challengers now, and their performances and underlying numbers back it up. They have scored the most goals (37) and also have the best xG (34.09) in the league.

I can’t see Sean Dyche’s team causing them too many problems. Palmer is the one pulling the strings, is nailed to start and is on penalties. He has a 49% Goal Involvement (goal or assist) in the league, which is by far the highest among his teammates and fifth best overall. He is at a healthy 39% to score at anytime also.

Ranking: 9.1/10

Mohamed Salah (£13.4m) – Liverpool – Fixture: Spurs (A)

Liverpool look to have the toughest game on paper out of the aforementioned, but facing Spurs is always a good fixture for the opposition attackers. They don’t ever sit back and play to attack no matter who they are up against.

Arne Slot’s side have one of the best attacks in the league this term, scoring 31 goals (fourth) with an xG of 30.75 (fourth also).

Mohamed Salah has been their talisman for an eighth consecutive season, and this is shaping up to be his best-ever campaign. He has 13 goals and nine assists already, with an xG of 10.5 and an xA of 3.3. His output and stats have been phenomenal, and his Goal Involvement sits at an unbelievable 71%.

Salah just seems to be involved in everything Liverpool do going forward and has goals and assists in abundance. The Egyptian is the best FPL asset ever, and he doesn’t look to be slowing down.

The Liverpool forward will get plenty of chances against this Tottenham team, and the fact he is nailed to start and is on penalties further solidifies his ranking this week.

Salah is at 47% to score at anytime in Gameweek 17, and I can see this match being a high-scoring game.

Ranking: 9.3/10
