Fox News cut away from a press briefing by Donald Trump’s spokeswoman after she made “explosive charges” about voter fraud

Kayleigh McEnany gave a press conference in Washington DC on Monday in which she repeated Mr Trump’s baseless claims about a stolen election as she accused the Democrats of “welcoming” fraud and illegal voting.

“We want every legal vote to be counted," said Ms McEnany in her opening statement.

Fox News anchor Neil Cavuto then cut the broadcast short and sought to clarity the nature of her remarks.

He said: “Whoa, whoa, whoa. I think we have to be very clear.

"She is charging that the other side is welcoming fraud and welcoming illegal voting. Unless she has more details to back that up, I can’t in good countenance continuing showing you this."

He added: “Maybe they do have something to back that up… but that’s an explosive charge to make that the other side is effectively rigging and cheating.

“If she does bring proof of that of course we’ll take you back.”

Fox News did not resume its broadcast of the press conference.

Fox News, owned by Rupert Murdoch, appears to have shifted away from its loyalty to Mr Trump over the past week amid signs of a growing rift. It was one of the first news organisations to call the state of Arizona for Joe Biden.

Later in the briefing, Ms McEnany was asked about whether she could provide any proof of incidents of voter fraud.

“What we are asking for right now is patience as we explore these equal protection claims among others,” Ms McEnany said.

Mr Trump has remained out of sight at the White House, with conversations ongoing about how the defeated president would spend the coming days and weeks as he challenged the people’s verdict.

Meanwhile Joe Biden has pressed forward with plans to build his administration, assembling a team of experts to face the surging pandemic. But the federal agency that needs to greenlight the beginnings of the transition of power held off on taking that step.
