Four tourists are killed in cable car horror south of Naples

Italian cable car crash - (AP)

A cable car carrying tourists in southern Naples crashed to the ground, killing at least four people and critically injuring another.

Italian authorities say the accident happened at Mount Faito in the town of Castellammare di Stabia on Thursday.

Officials said an upward cabin had been near the top of the mountain when one of the cables supporting it snapped.

Sixteen people were rescued from a second downward-going car - also on the line at the time - and winched to safety, Naples Prefect Michele de Bari added.

“The traction cable broke. The emergency brake downstream worked, but evidently not the one on the cabin that was entering the station,” said Castellammare mayor Luigi Vicinanza.

Italy’s alpine rescue, along with firefighters, police and civil protection services responded.

The incident occurred just a week after the cable car, popular for its views of Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples, reopened for the season.

Premier Giorgio Meloni expressed her condolences for the victims and their families and said she was in touch with rescuers. She was in Washington where she met with US President Donald Trump.

Public transport firm EAV, owners of the cable car, described the crash as “a tragedy” on social media.
