Four things spotted in Liverpool training as two stars absent and Joe Gomez leaves early

Liverpool have been given another rousing welcome as they continued their preparations for the new season.

The Reds are in Singapore for the second leg of their tour of the Far East in which they will play Crystal Palace for the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy.

Jurgen Klopp put his players through their paces at the National Stadium on Thursday evening ahead of the following day’s match. But what could be gleaned from the session?

Fans loving it

One aspect of the tour that has travelled from Thailand to Singapore is the genuine feeling of affection from Liverpool supporters in the region.

Those fortunate enough to be present at open training – which was played under a closed roof in humid conditions pushing 30 degrees at 7pm local time – cheered almost every time the ball struck the back of the net in the various training drills.

And there was particular delight reserved for Trent Alexander-Arnold as he trotted over to take a corner. The cheers for the right-back were reciprocated with warm applause, while Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino were among the Liverpool players signing autographs for some of those watching..

Duo absent

Liverpool had trained at the nearby Kallang Football Hub on Wednesday night shortly after their arrival in Singapore, with the intensity of the session having ramped up from the spell in Bangkok.

And there were further signs the players were beginning to acclimatise to the workload with another impressive session where touch, passing and energy were clearly evident.

However, there was no Diogo Jota and Alisson Becker involved, the former having undergone scans on a possible hamstring issue earlier in the day and the latter complaining of discomfort after Thursday morning’s session.

Gomez walks off

The heavy workload and relentless schedule means pre-season is always fraught with a sense of danger regards fitness, particularly if players have had time away from training during the summer.

Joe Gomez walked out of the session early on and was given a rousing reception from the fans as he disappeared down the tunnel, although he appeared to be moving freely when walking through the mixed zone afterwards.

And both Melkamu Fraudendorf and Rhys Williams suffered knocks at various points in the session, but the latter was able to return before the conclusion.

Settling set-pieces

It may have only been an hour, but it was nevertheless interesting to gain a glimpse behind the curtain as Liverpool trained.

The outfield players were split into three different groups – those wearing white, green and yellow bibs – with a lengthy part of the session working through set-pieces.

The backroom staff were even on hand to act as an assistant referee to signal any offsides. No stone left unturned and all that.
