Four things spotted in Liverpool training as Roberto Firmino seen but three stars missing

Liverpool are busy gearing up for their return to Premier League action this weekend when they face Brighton.

The Reds travel to the Amex Stadium looking to once again close the gap on leaders Manchester City in the league table.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are six points behind City with a game in hand, as the season begins to near its conclusion.

Ahead of the trip to the south coast, Liverpool’s players have been working hard at the AXA Training Centre in preparation for the match.

Here is a look at some of the things we spotted from Liverpool’s latest training session.

Bobby looks set for return

Some good news on the injury front sees Roberto Firmino looks primed to make his first-team return.

Klopp said last week before the win over West Ham that the Brazilian had been in training - and he was seen in images put out on March 7 - but he is yet to return to the matchday squad.

Firmino has been sidelined with an injury since the first leg victory over Inter Milan last month, and has missed Liverpool’s last six matches across four competitions.

Now that Firmino seems to be back fully integrated with the first-team’s training session, it looks like Brighton could mark his return from injury in some capacity.

Trio absent

While one player has returned to training, three players were absent from the latest session.

Ibrahima Konate, Thiago Alcantara and Virgil van Dijk were nowhere to be seen, at least in the initial pictures released from Thursday’s training session.

Konate was not part of the squad for the recent defeat to Inter, and was also absent from the training pictures from Monday’s session. Indications earlier in the week suggested he had picked up a knock and not a major issue.

Thiago was on the receiving end of a forceful tackle from Alexis Sanchez on Tuesday night, and could be taking it easy while it settles down.

Van Dijk's apparent absence is less obviously explained. It may be an extra rest day for the Dutchman, given the amount of minutes he has racked up recently - and indeed all season.

We’ll find out on all three more when Klopp speaks to the media on Friday.

Youngster handed chance

Klopp always tried to give young players a chance if they impress, and no-one is more evident of that than Trent Alexander-Arnold and, more recently, Harvey Elliott.

Another player who will want to follow a similar path is Tyler Morton, who has had a handful of first-team opportunites already this term.

Morton was pictured taking part in the latest training session, and will have an eye on being part of the squad for the trip to Brighton.

He came off the bench against Norwich City in the FA Cup earlier this month.

Another coach on the scene

One of the advantages of the AXA Training Centre is that Liverpool’s first-team and academy groups are all based in the same location.

Reds Under-23 boss Barry Lewtas was pictured talking to Klopp at the training session with the first-team.

Klopp has a habit of handing chances to the young players, and having Lewtas in attendance is yet more evidence of the structure of the club paying dividends.

Let’s see if Klopp asked Lewtas for any advice on which youngsters are coming through to next be handed a chance...
