Four things spotted in Liverpool training as Naby Keita provides boost but defender sidelined

Jurgen Klopp had his Liverpool side back at Kirkby earlier today after last night's 1-0 win at home to West Ham United.

The Reds picked up their third consecutive win in all competitions to climb up to seventh in the Premier League table thanks to Darwin Nunez 's 22nd-minute header - his first home goal since arriving from Benfica.

But with such a short turnaround before Saturday lunchtime's trip to Nottingham Forest and a midweek return to Champions League football at Ajax, Klopp has wasted no time in getting his players back in.

READ MORE: Liverpool handed midfield injury boost after Jurgen Klopp hints at comeback plan

Here are four key takeaways from today's session.

Naby Keita returns

Liverpool were handed a big boost in their midfield as Naby Keita took part in first-team training.

The 27-year-old has not featured for the Reds since a five-minute substitute appearance against Manchester City in the Community Shield back in July - through a combination of illness and injury - but has been gradually intensifying his rehabilitation from the thigh strain that has kept him out most recently.

Klopp confirmed ahead of Wednesday's clash with the Hammers that the Guinea international was back on the turf at Kirkby, and pictures from today's session show the midfielder is very much involved in full.

Rest day for many

The vast majority of last night's players were absent from on-the-pitch training today as they recover ahead of Saturday.

The likes of Nunez, Roberto Firmino, Jordan Henderson and Virgil van Dijk were all resting ahead of this weekend's trip to the City Ground as Klopp looks to manage the load of his squad during this busy period.

Liverpool have had enough injury problems already this campaign, and the Reds boss will be urging caution in overloading key players.

Klopp and Salah deep in discussion

A few of last night's starters were present, however, and one of them was Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian was spotted in deep conversation with Klopp during training - although his attire of running shoes and a jumper round his waist suggests the 30-year-old was not included in anything too strenuous.

Salah scored a wonderful winner in the 1-0 win against Manchester City on Sunday, but has struggled to exert his trademark influence throughout the season. Perhaps he and Klopp were mulling over this weekend's plan of action down the right.

Konate still absent

Centre-back Ibrahima Konate was once again absent from training, making a return to play on Saturday unlikely.

The 23-year-old suffered a muscle injury in the 7-1 Champions League win at Rangers and has been unavailable for the games against West Ham and City. Klopp hinted ahead of last night's clash that the French international could have made a return this weekend if he joins training beforehand, but his absence suggests that may come too soon.

“Ibou, not in team training yet. That we knew before,” he said. “It will not be long. He will be out for maybe 10 days until he can start training again. Tomorrow, it’s a week.

"Maybe Saturday, whenever he’s back in team training. He’s not long out so if he can train properly, he’s available."
