Crews from four different fire stations put out a blaze at a derelict domestic property in Harehills late on Bank Holiday Monday. The fire broke out in Karnac Road and was reported at 11.27pm with firefighters from Leeds, Killingbeck, Moortown and Bradford attending the scene – with aerial support also provided.
A bedroom and the roof of the property were alight and five pumps, four sets of breathing apparatus, two hose reels and a high-powered fan were required to bring the fire under control, extinguish the flames and clear the smoke. There were no casualties.
According to the fire and rescue services, in the event of a house fire you should not delay your safe exit from the building to save valuables or look for pets or investigate the fire. You should also crawl on the floor if there's smoke (the air is cleaner near the floor) and put your nose as low as possible because smoke is toxic and can be fatal.
As you go out, only open the doors you need to and close any open doors that you can to slow the spread of the fire and, in addition, feel doors with the back of your hand before you open them (if they’re warm, don’t open them because the fire will be on the other side). Finally, if you’re escaping with others, stay together if you can.
