Four realistic candidates for Rangers interim manager role after Clement sacked

Rangers are searching for their next manager after Philippe Clement was dismissed.

The Belgian boss was relieved of his duties after the Scottish Premiership defeat to St Mirren.

Rangers chiefs will now have to decide upon his successor for the remainder of the season and beyond.

It would surely make sense for Rangers to appoint an interim until the end of the season with Celtic clear in the league and the Ibrox side out of the Scottish Cup. Rangers are, though, in the last 16 of the Europa League where they will face Fenerbahce.

However, with discussions over a 49ers Enterprises takeover at Rangers, and limited chance for silverware this season it would be no surprise to see a temporary manager put in place.

Here are four realistic options to become Rangers interim manager after Philippe Clement was dismissed...

Issame Charai

Issame Charai only joined Rangers as assistant manager in January. Appointed to the post after Andries Ulderink departed the club, Charai was second in command to the Belgian boss. The Moroccan coach previously worked in the Belgian Pro League as an assistant and as Morocco's under-23 manager. He led the youth international side to the under-23 African Cup of Nations title. Charai would offer some continuity for the playing squad should he be handed the interim post - a rile he previously held at Al-Faisaly back in 2013.

Steven Davis

Club legend Steven Davis could be an option having previously served as interim manager. The Northern Ireland icon managed two matches, against Aris Limassol and St Mirren, in the period between Michael Beale's departure and Philippe Clement joining. Davis could present a viable option as a popular figure both amongst players and staff as well as supporters. Davis helped coach the Northern Ireland side for friendlies last year and has been vocal on his desire to explore full-time coaching.

Kevin Thomson

Kevin Thomson only returned to Rangers as an academy coach earlier this month but could be a possible candidate as interim. The experienced coach made his return to Rangers in a new role to assist under-18 head manager Steven Smith. Thomson does, though, have experience as a first-team manager having led Kelty Hearts to the League Two title in 2022. He later resigned from the post. Now back at Auchenhowie, Thomson may be viewed as a safe pair of hands for an interim period.

Neil McCann

An outside option to take the reins for the remainder of the season could be Neil McCann. The Rangers hero has management experience at Dundee and Inverness Caledonian Thistle, the latter of which was in an interim capacity. McCann, who won three league titles at Ibrox as a player, is currently working as a pundit, regularly featuring on BBC.
