Four people managed to scramble free from the wreckage of a car which ended on its roof following a motorway crash last night.
Police, firefighters on board four fire engines and paramedics were called to the crash at junction 2 of the the M61 near Kearsley at 7.15pm on Saturday.
Four people were inside a red saloon car which crashed into a barrier on the northbound carriageway and flipped onto its roof. All the occupants managed to scramble free from the wreckage and escaped serious injury, according to the emergency services.
One lane of the carriageway remained closed for more than two hours, leading to congestion in the area. A police investigation into the crash is continuing.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service said: "At 7.15pm yesterday, Saturday, 7th December, a car carrying four people was involved in a road traffic collision on the M61 motorway in Kearsley. The (road traffic collision) resulted in the car flipping onto its roof.
"Firefighters from Eccles, Farnworth, Whitefield, and the Technical Rescue Unit from Leigh attended the incident where luckily the four occupants of the car were able to escape the damaged vehicle themselves.
"Firefighters isolated the vehicle's electrics and made sure the scene was safe before leaving after 35 minutes."
A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed the occupants suffered only minor injuries and that an investigation into the incident was continuing.
