Four people die in Bristol region after contracting Covid - latest breakdown of infections

Nearly 1,600 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in the Bristol region today (Tuesday, February 8) marking a significant rise from previous days.

All areas have seen a rise in cases today with a total of 1,595 cases recorded in the region in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number since the start of the pandemic to 307,106 cases.

This marks a big rise since yesterday when just 1,254 cases were recorded and since February 1 when 1,291 cases were confirmed.

Tragically, a further four deaths within 28 days of a positive test were confirmed in the Bristol region in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of losses since the start of the pandemic to 1,790.

A total of 143 people are being cared for at hospitals across the Bristol region after contracting Covid - this is a slight rise compared to 140 last week.

University Hospitals Bristol, which runs the BRI, currently has 106 in-patients, while North Bristol Trust has 37. And three people are battling on ventilators.

The national picture looks slightly different to what we are seeing in Bristol in terms of case numbers - there has been a drop in new cases of 20.2 per cent over the past seven days, which is a significant fall.

However, the number of deaths has increased over the last week across the country, with a rise of 11.4 per cent in the last seven days.

The number of positive test results in each area of the Bristol region since the pandemic began is recorded below, with new positive test results recorded today in brackets:

  • Bath and North East Somerset: 47,280 (+277)

  • Bristol: 134,214 (+643)

  • North Somerset: 50,031 (+284)
  • South Gloucestershire: 75,581 (+391)

The number of deaths recorded in each area of Bristol since the beginning of the pandemic is as follows, with new deaths within 28 days of a positive test in brackets:

  • Bath and North East Somerset: 289 (-)

  • Bristol: 658 (+1)
  • North Somerset: 410 (+1)
  • South Gloucestershire: 433 (+2)
