Four new candidates declare in North Carolina

Ballotpedia tracked four new state-level candidates in North Carolina between Aug. 7 and Aug. 13. This was one more candidate than the prior week.

One of those candidates is a Democrat and three are Republican. All four are running for state executive offices in 2024.

Details on these candidates are below:

  • Ben Clark (D) is running for Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina. Clark said, “[He] is running for Lt. Governor because he believes that the work is far from done – for NC, and for America. As Lt. Governor, [he] will get things done, just as he did in the Senate by working across the aisle, finding areas of agreement and compromise, standing up to special interests, and putting families first.”
  • Dan Bishop (R) is running for Attorney General of North Carolina. Bishop said, “He’s running for Attorney General to defend the rule of law and protect North Carolina. [He] believes Democrats like Roy Cooper and Josh Stein have abused the state’s top law enforcement office by turning it into a stepping stone for higher office and a platform to spread liberal propaganda.”
  • Jim Kee (R) is running for North Carolina State Auditor. Kee said, “… As a Councilman, I worked to increase economic development to attract new businesses, develop and sustain small businesses and nonprofits with an emphasis on minority businesses as well as improve public safety.  With two terms of city council experience, I understand what it takes to find solutions, how important it is to work together and navigate the complicated governmental agencies to help get things done.”
  • James Upchurch (R) is running for North Carolina State Auditor. Upchurch said, “I’ve spent my time as a County Commissioner creating a more transparent and fiscally responsible government. I’ll do the same thing as North Carolina’s Auditor.”

Since the beginning of the year, Ballotpedia has identified 33 candidates for state-level offices in North Carolina. Four hundred and thirty-seven candidates ran for state-level office in North Carolina in 2022, while 508 ran in 2020. In 2022, 178 were Democratic, while 232 were Republican. In 2020, 242 were Democratic and 235 were Republican. Nationally, Ballotpedia has tracked 547 Democrats and 645 Republicans running for state-level office in 2023, and 99 Democrats and 151 Republicans running in 2024.
