Four Keralites in Indian kurash team

KOCHI: Four Keralites are part of the 13-member kurash team that will represent India at the 7th Children of Asia International Sports Games being held in Russia.

Rajan Varghese, who is an international three-star referee and technical director of Kurash Association of India, was nominated by Olympic Council of Asia to participate as a referee at the games being held at Vladivostok in Russia.

Athletes of 19 sports from the Asian continent are participating in the games being held from July 27th to August 8th.

The athletes from Kerala who are part of the Indian Kurash team are Rowan Maria, who is participating in the 44-kilogram female category, and Shahzad Mohammed KH, who will be competing in the 42-kilogram male category.

Rowan is a standard 9 student at Rajagiri Christu Jayanthi Public School at Kakkanad while Shahzad is studying in class 9 at Naipunnya Public School at Thrikkakkara. Shahzad is the son of Haneefa KG, head of physical education department of MES College at Marampally near Aluva and a former Kurash coach.

While the Indian Kurash team consists of five boys and four girls, the rest of the athletes are from Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Chattisgarh. The Indian team departed for Russia by Sunday evening, accompanied by their coach Tesney Varghese.
