Four in a Bed: The Welsh five star country house where harsh guests said they wouldn't return

A Welsh five-star country home faced some tough critics on Four in a Bed who described the venue as "too grand for us". The Channel 4 show sees hotels, country houses and holiday accommodation owners compete against each other to be crowned the best. And this week one north Wales country house failed to impress its guests, with two competitors saying they would not want to return to the country house.

Jane and her friend Sharon run the Plas Maenan Country House in the Conwy Valley. While they pride themselves on being a five-star establishment, with the venue described as an "elegant Edwardian country house full of character and charm with beautiful views", some of their guests thought differently. Sharon and Jane were hosting Gemma and Mark, who run Burton Constable Holiday Park in Yorkshire, Claire and Jessica, who run Derwent House Apartments in Scarborough, and Stephen who runs The Crossing Inn in Cumbria. Stephen and Gemma and Mark both said they would not be returning to Plas Maenan Country House, despite it receiving top marks for cleanliness.

Although Stephen rated Plas Maenan Country House with a ten out of ten for cleanliness he gave the facilities a six out of ten. He said he was not impressed that the shower head was not detachable and found chipped paint on the walls.

Stephen also believed the breakfast eggs were spoilt by the way they were cooked and the sausages were too dense, giving a score of seven out of ten for breakfast. Gemma and Mark awarded Plas Maenan Country House a nine out of ten for cleanliness, after finding two dead flies in their room and one small smear on the shower door, and an eight out of ten for facilities as there was no mini bar or toilet brush.

Jane and Sharon were left very disappointed by the results (Channel 4)

Gemma and Mark said the Plas Maenan Country House was "too grand for us" and Stephen believed the country house "still has a way to go" to impress him. Jane and Sharon were very disappointed to read the results.

Jane said: "There is clearly things we need to address...there are lessons to learn about checking before guests come in." She added: "I'm shocked, very disappointed because to get such high scores and then say they won't stay here is a little bit bewildering."

Four in a Bed airs on weeknights at 5pm on Channel 4.
