Four in a Bed contestants reveal secrets of the show and how bosses provoke drama

A couple who competed to win Four in a Bed have spilled some of programme's big secrets and say producers love to ramp up the drama.

The very British B&B competition sees proud owners go up against each other to show which couple boasts the best business - and sparks nearly always fly.

They are judged on everything from breakfast, room size, overall experience, how clean the facilities are and, of course, the hospitality.

Things often get tense - and the game-playing accusations are pretty much an every-episode occurrence.

Now, two of the stars of the latest series have taken fans behind the scenes.

Contestants Julie and Neale told fans some of the show's big secrets (Channel 4)

Julie and Neale, who own Copperfields Vegetarian Guest House in Kent, revealed their filming took over 14 days to complete.

They also say C4 bosses love nothing better than to provoke a bit of tension between them all.

In an interview with Metro, Julie said: “They asked us lots of questions, the importance of which we realised later because the questions she asked very much affected who they pair you with on the show.

"They asked us things like ‘What do you hate most when you go to another bed and breakfast?’

“If you were to say, ‘I hate dogs,’ then they pit you against someone who had dogs.

"We didn’t realise at the time, we were just quite honest and upfront. So they pitted us with a Scottish couple who were very much meat-oriented."

Neale also said the couple had to rearrange an entire room and change their clothes because they weren’t very "camera friendly".

TV bosses often send you to places you would rather not got, they said (Channel 4)

The Channel 4 show, which is similar to Come Dine With Me, sees four different groups of B&B owners compete against each other in a bid to win an iconic gold plaque.

Owners stay for a night in their competitors' venues, rate their stay and state what they would pay for it - but sometimes competitive spirit takes over and they sell each other short in order to win.

The show hit the headlines in 2020 when a guesthouse saw Trip Advisor reviews suspended after the owners attempted to sabotage other contestants.

The Trip Advisor page for the guesthouse states: "Due to a recent event that has attracted media attention and has caused an influx of review submissions that do not describe a first-hand experience, we have temporarily suspended publishing new reviews for this listing.

"If you've had a firsthand experience at this property, please check back soon - we're looking forward to receiving your review!"
