Four human skulls destined for the United States have been discovered in a package at an airport in Mexico, custom officials have revealed. The Express reports that officers from Mexico’s National Guard made the grim discovery as the unidentified remains passed through X-ray equipment in a cardboard box.
The National Guard said the package originated from the western coastal state of Michoacan - one of the most violent parts of the country - and was destined for an address in Manning, South Carolina.
The National Guard gave no further details on the age, identity or possible motive for the sending of the human remains. But it said that transferring human remains requires a special permit from a competent health authority which was not obtained.
The National Guard made the discovery on Friday (December 30). A spokesman said: “During inspections at parcel delivery companies and through X-ray equipment, Guardia Nacional detected four skulls of apparently human origin at the Querétaro Intercontinental Airport, wrapped in transparent plastic and aluminium foil, with no health record.”
Michoacán is one of the most violent states in Mexico. Footage filmed last year showed mourners at a funeral being lined up against a wall before being shot dead in a hail of gunfire.
Police did not arrive at the scene in the San José de Gracia municipality until five hours after the shooting, by which time the gunmen had removed the dead bodies and cleaned the blood from the walls and street, according to Michoacán State Attorney General Adrián Solís López. Officials said the killings were allegedly part of a violent feud between two members of a drugs cartel.
