POLICE are investigating an alleged attack on a Merewether Street in the early hours of Sunday.

Emergency crews were called to Hickson Street just after 12.15am on August 11 where a group of people were allegedly assaulted by several men.

The Newcastle Herald understands the alleged victims were four young men.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated them at the scene before they were taken to John Hunter Hospital with what police said in a statement was "a range of injuries".

Police began investigating, arresting an 18-year-old at a Maitland address on Sunday.

The man was charged with two counts of recklessly cause grievous bodily harm in company, two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company, and affray.

He received strict conditional bail to face Newcastle Local Court on September 12.
