A cancer care centre, a footbridge, a school of sport and a guest house are among this year's Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Yorkshire Award winners.
Judges selected Carnegie School of Sport in Leeds, designed by Sheppard Robson; Leeds Footbridge, designed by Gagarin Studio with DP Squared; Maggie's Yorkshire in Leeds, designed by Heatherwick Studio and The Alice Hawthorn at Nun Monkton.
The four projects will now go on to contend for the RIBA National Award, which will be announced in June.
Sheppard Robson last year completed the £45m Carnegie School of Sport for Leeds Beckett University’s Headingley Campus, which brings the Carnegie School of Sport’s specialist teaching and research facilities under one roof, having previously been spread over five buildings.
The major sports centre for the university features an encased rooftop running track while also providing a base for undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes as well as a training hub for elite athletes.
The Maggie’s Centre in Leeds, which provides free practical and emotional support for people with cancer, marks the first health building completed by Heatherwick Studio, founded by designer Thomas Heatherwick.
Tree and plant-filled areas form a focal part of the building, based in the grounds of St James’s University Hospital in Leeds - both inside and outside - to create a welcoming, non-clinical atmosphere.
The Leeds Footbridge crossing the River Aire in Leeds, connecting two sides of the city within the Climate Innovation District, is already an award winner, having become the inaugural winner of the National Infrastructure Award for Design Innovation in 2020.
Meanwhile, De Matos Ryan makes its place as a winner after saving the community pub The Alice Hawthorn from closure. Based in the North Yorkshire village of Nun Monkton, the scheme involved the addition of 12 guest bedrooms and the renovation of its Grade II listed pub.
Regional jury chair Adam Clark, said: “The variety of the award-winning buildings this year - from typology to scale demonstrate the skill and sensitivity of RIBA architects.
"Careful and appropriate use of materials alongside crisp detailing particularly stand out - reflecting the increasing need to provide the highest quality sustainable buildings for our towns, cities and villages.
"Once again, the RIBA Awards programme showcases the vitally important role that architects play in enhancing and protecting our environment whilst lifting our spirits in challenging times.”
Alex Smith of Sheppard Robson won RIBA Yorkshire Project Architect of the Year 2022 for Carnegie School of Sport whole De Matos Ryan won RIBA Yorkshire Client of the Year 2022 and RIBA Yorkshire Sustainability Award 2022, sponsored by Michelmersh for The Alice Hawthorn.
The 2022 RIBA Yorkshire Building of the Year, sponsored by Taylor Maxwell will be announced on May 24 at a ceremony at RIBA’s HQ in London.
