Four Australian Tourists Hospitalised In Fiji After Suspected Alcohol Poisoning At Popular Resort

Several tourists, including four Australians, have been hospitalised in Fiji following a suspected alcohol poisoning incident at a well-known resort.

On Sunday, Fiji’s Ministry of Health confirmed that seven tourists including four Australians, one American and two foreigners who are living in Fiji, have been rushed to hospital after consuming cocktails at the Coral Coast’s Warwick Resort.

Per The Fiji Times, the Ministry claims the tourists were taken to Sigatoka Hospital on Sunday afternoon with “nausea, vomiting and neurological symptoms” after ingesting a cocktail prepared at the resort’s bar.

They have since been transferred to Lautoka Hospital, with local authorities launching investigations into the incident.

“The affected patients’ age ranges from 18 to 56 years, and two patients have been transferred to Lautoka Hospital due to the severity of their condition,” the Ministry told the publication.

According to the ABC, a 56-year-old Australian woman is “under constant surveillance” and another 19-year-old is “experiencing serious medical episodes”.

It also reports that two other Australian women, a 49-year-old and an 18-year-old, are in critical condition “but not as serious”.

Following the hospitalisations, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) updated its travel advisory, urging Aussies of the “potential risks around drink spiking and methanol poisoning through consuming alcoholic drinks”.

DFAT also confirmed that it’s providing consular assistance to two Australian families but declined to provide further details, per The Guardian Australia.

Alongside DFAT’s update, Smartraveller also updated its travel advice for Fiji, urging tourists to be vigilant when consuming alcoholic beverages.

“Be alert to the potential risks around drink spiking and methanol poisoning through consuming alcoholic drinks in #Fiji. Get urgent medical help if you suspect drink spiking,” it wrote in its statement.

The suspected alcohol poisoning incident in Fiji comes weeks after Melbourne teens Bianca Jones, Holly Bowles and four other tourists passed away from a suspected mass methanol poisoning incident in Laos.
