The meaning behind the giant purple cube that mysteriously appeared on the map of Fortnite: Battle Royale may have finally been solved.
Since spawning from a lightning storm on 24 August on the border of Paradise Palms, players of the popular video game have been baffled by the peculiar box and its seemingly random movements.
Within a few days of appearing, further intrigue was sparked after the purple box began leaving a trail of symbols – or runes – in its wake.
Players initially tried to attack the box with weapons, however electrical strikes damaged their health and even killed them.
Other players conducted tests on the purple cube in an effort to unlock its mysteries, with one investigator even going as far as carrying out spectral analysis of the cube's sounds.
Popular Youtube gamer Drift0r speculated: "You're only seeing one part of this cube, one three-dimensional projection of it, when there's actually many, many, many more sides to it that you haven't seen."
He noted that the design of the cube is reminiscent of the Monoliths from the sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey, Drift0r noted, which were built by aliens and placed around the Solar System.
Despite the effort put in by Drif0r and other gamers, none of the investigations turned up any definitive results – until now.
By crowd-sourcing help from the FortniteBR Reddit forum, one player was able to map out the future movements of the purple box.
Reddit user DatCringeyGuy asked fellow players to search for patches of grass that seemed to be where the runes were appearing.
Six points were found, allowing the Redditor to link them together and map a potential path of the cube's future movements.
The final destination of the box seems to be Loot Lake – something confirmed by data miners who discovered a command saying "MoveToLake" on the final rune.
The purple cube is expected to reach the lake in time for the launch of Season 6 of Fortnite: Battle Royale, at which point its final purpose should – hopefully – be revealed.
