Forth Road Bridge closes amid 'hazardous' driving conditions in Storm Eowyn

THE Forth Road Bridge has closed due to Storm Eowyn and winds topping 70mph.

Most of central Scotland is on red alert with the most severe weather warning in place until 5pm and Police Scotland urging the public to "avoid travel on the roads" in the affected areas.

The Forth Road Bridge is closed and this includes the walkway and cycle path.

Due to high winds and gusts of more than 70mph there are restrictions on the Queensferry Crossing which is now closed to all high sided vehicles, caravans, trailers and motorcycles.

Further down the Forth, the same restrictions apply at the Clackmannanshire Bridge while the Kincardine Bridge is open.

The Met Office's red weather warning for wind, affecting most of central and southern Scotland, lasts from 10am to 5pm and will mean "very dangerous conditions and significant disruption".

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s south east network manager, said: “Driving conditions are expected to be hazardous across the network. All road users should pay close attention to weather warnings and comply with police advice to avoid travel during the storm."

The measures in place dictate that once high winds reach 65mph, the Forth Road Bridge has to close.

The Queensferry Crossing was designed to withstand more severe weather, albeit the bridge has had to shut on occasion due to ice falling from the cables, and had wind shielding installed.

This means that it will only completely shut due to high winds if gusts top 100mph.

At 90mph, the crossing is closed to all vehicles apart from cars and a 30mph limit is put in place.

Restrictions are put in place if gusts hit 70mph, which is the case today.
